SAVANNAH, GA – January 30, 2019 – The Savannah Philharmonic is slated to continue its commemorative 2018-19 season with the “Musicians’ Choice” concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts, 32 Abercorn St., in downtown Savannah. In honor of 10 years of dedicated work by the Philharmonic’s musicians, this masterful concert will feature Shostakovich’s tumultuous “Symphony No. 10,” a work chosen by the musicians themselves, and Johannes Brahms’ Double Concerto for violin and cello.
Internationally renowned virtuoso brothers Benny and Eric Kim will join the orchestra as guests for Brahms’ deeply romantic Concerto. Together, the Kims have performed the Brahms Double Concerto, numerous times and have a long association with Savannah having appeared at the Savannah Music Festival for the last fifteen years.
Benny has performed with the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Boston, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Detroit, and internationally with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Orquésta Sinfonica Nacional de México, and the major orchestras of South Africa. In recital, Benny has performed in virtually every major city in the United States, including critically acclaimed engagements at New York’s 92nd St. Y and at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center.
Eric joined the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music as professor of cello at the beginning the 2009-10 academic year. He served as principal cello of the Cincinnati Symphony from 1989 to 2009 and has also held principal cello positions with the San Diego and Denver symphonies.
Having made his solo debut at age 15 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Eric was a featured soloist with the Juilliard Orchestra on its critically acclaimed tour of the Far East and has appeared as soloist with the symphony orchestras of Cincinnati, Denver, and San Diego.
Highlights include chamber music debuts at Carnegie Hall, Boston’s Symphony Hall, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, performing both Brahms Sextets with Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman and Michael Tree, among others.
“Benny and I are very honored to perform the Brahms Double Concerto with the Savannah Philharmonic,” Eric Kim said. “This is an exquisite piece that we always enjoy playing, and it is sure to delight the audience.”
Under the artistic direction of Maestro Shannon and Executive Director Terri O’Neil, the Savannah Philharmonic’s tenth season will continue with orchestra classics, impressive displays and crowd favorites concluding with the season finale May 4, 2019.
