SAVANNAH, GA – December 18, 2018 – The Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus is slated to present its first 2019 concert – The Best of Broadway – on Saturday, January 19, 7:30 p.m., at the Johnny Mercer Theater, located at 301 W. Oglethorpe Ave. After the rousing success of The Best of Rogers and Hammerstein concert in January 2017, the Savannah Philharmonic is pleased to welcome back stars from the Savannah Theatre for a spectacular evening of Broadway classics.
Artistic Director and Conductor, Peter Shannon, and Chorusmaster, Dr. Matt Caine, are thrilled to have the wonderfully talented members of the Savannah Theatre ensemble–Michelle Meece, Matthew Meece, Bill Stelzer, Gretchen Kristine Stelzer, F. Michael Zaller and Shannon Zaller—join them in presenting their own exhilarating rendition of beloved, Broadway masterpieces.
Peter Shannon said, “Our first Rogers and Hammerstein concert with the fantastic singers from the Savannah Theater was such an incredible success, replete with all your favorite tunes and an energetic packed-out Civic center, that it was an easy decision to do the same thing again. January 19th is the date when the full orchestra, chorus and singers from the Savannah Theater will electrify and enchant us all again. Highlights include many of the hits from the first concert and music from Fiddler on the Roof, Phantom of the Opera and even music from the latest Broadway hit “The Greatest Showman”. I’m a sucker for a good Abba tune, so I’ve added a medley from Mamma Mia! I love doing these pops shows with Savannah Philharmonic’s orchestra and chorus. We had such fun at the Christmas concert doing the pops stuff; and though they are exquisite with the classical repertoire, I have to admit to having a lot of fun on stage with concerts like this. Add our friends from the Savannah Theater to this mix and it’s a sold-out night of fun! See you there!”
Presented by Susan and Ron Whitaker, The Best of Broadway is designed to celebrate many of the Broadway favorites from what is known as New York City’s Great White Way. Nicknamed for the section of Broadway located between 42nd and 53rd streets, the mile-long stretch was illuminated in 1880 by Brush arc lamps, making it among the first electrically lighted streets in the United States. Inspired a few years later by the millions of lights on theatre marquees and billboard advertisements that had come to illuminate the area, a headline, “Found on the Great White Way,” appeared in the February 3, 1902 edition of the New York Evening Telegram, after which the nickname stuck. From Carousel to Wicked and Fiddler to Phantom, this electrifying concert is sure to dazzle and delight present day lovers of Broadway’s Great White Way!
Tickets for The Best of Broadway can be purchased by visiting www.savannahboxoffice.com; prices start at $25. The performance is filling up quickly, though, so fans are encouraged to reserve their seats soon.
