Minghao Liu is an emerging leggero tenor hailed for his easy and powerful high notes and well-polished bel canto musicality, born in Qingdao that was famous for its global beer brand, Tsing-Tao Beer. He is fluent in English, Russian and Chinese.
At the age of 17 years old, he went to Ukraine and studied at S.S. Prokofiev Music Conservatory in Donetsk, 2009. He finished with both Bachelor and Master degrees in opera. Beside studying opera, he was one of the best hip-hop dancers in Ukraine who won 12 professional underground dance competitions. He also won the best 25 dancers in Ukrainian National Telegram ‘You Think You Can Dance’. After that, he became one of the most acclaimed judges and teachers. Based on his influences, the local dance culture started to bloom because his advertisement was all over the city. He trained many Ukrainian dancers to become teachers to continue helping local and national dance communities. In 2014 he fled the country and dropped everything he established in Donetsk when the Ukrainian crisis elevated to war around Donetsk. So, he went to study at the University of Alberta in Canada, 2015.
After he finished his degree he received a generous scholarship from Deen Larson who was the director of Franz-Schubert Institute in Baden, Austria. He received massive amount of vocal and German diction training with world renowned mentors like Elly Ameling, Robert Holl, Julius Drake and Helmut Deutsch that had brought him massive amounts of artistic experiences.
In 2019, he performed his first opera in Miami Music Festival (MMF) by singing the leading role Tamino in Mozart’s opera Die zauberflöte and then he got his first review on South Florida Classical Music Review “Liu produced tones with an easy lyricism, bringing gleaming notes to the upper register in his Act I Aria in which he contemplates the portrait of Pamina.” During the MMF, he performed at the Chopin Festival closing night concert with the director of the festival Kevin Kenner at Gusman Hall in Frost school of music. Later that year, he performed in the house of Rossini in Pesaro, Italy with his Chinese teacher Song Yi, who impressed the director of Rossini Opera Festival Maestro Ernesto Palacio. After the concert, he was encouraged to participate in the Pesaro International Music Competition named after G.Rossini which he won later in 2020. After that, he received another invitation from MMF to perform their first cruise tour show to entertain their board members. When he finished the tour, he received the invitation letters along with the commission of preparing Il Barbiere di Siviglia to cover the leading role Almaviva for the upcoming Rossini Opera Festival 2021 season. But the Covid-19 global pandemic made the opportunities vanished.
During 2021, he managed to get back to Miami by studying in the Frost School of Music where he first performed. It allows him to come back to the opera market and continue his pursuit of opera dreams. During the summer he participated in 4 programs all with a fully paired scholarship. In these programs he deeply impressed the legendary baritone Sherrill Milnes and Legendary Mezzo soprano Fredrica Von Stade, that got him the first contract by singing the leading role Almaviva in Rossini’s opera Il barbiere di Siviglia after his graduation at Gulfshore Opera in 2023 season, after finished his Artist Diploma in December. He is now represented by Wade Artist Management.
